What role did your racial and/or cultural identity play in your desire to become a school leader?
Coming from a South Asian background, I understand how powerful it is for students and teachers of color to see leaders who look like them—it fosters a sense of belonging and shows that their identities are valued. My experiences drive me to advocate for inclusive policies and address the unique challenges faced by underrepresented students.
What role does your racial and/or cultural identity play in how you lead now?
In leadership, I aim to create a supportive environment where diversity is leveraged in order to make well-informed decisions that best serve students. My background fuels my commitment to building a school culture that is inclusive, affirming, and representative of our diverse community.
Which program did you choose and how did you find it/choose it?
I went back to my alma mater at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). I researched programs that offered the degree and certification I was seeking, were accessible online and part-time since I work a full-time job, and were cost-effective. Ultimately, UIUC met all these criteria, and I decided it was the best fit for me to pursue my goal of becoming a school principal and working toward my Master’s degree.
What do you like about it / who would you recommend it to?
The most appealing part of this program is that you’re cohorted with about 18-19 other educators who are working toward similar goals. I take all of my classes with my cohort and have really gotten to know them better through each class. This added layer of support is invaluable. We have a text thread, share resources, and work collaboratively to accelerate our learning. I would recommend this program to anyone looking for a supportive, community-driven learning experience.
What advice would you give to someone who is currently searching for a good-fit program?
Make sure the program’s requirements align with your needs. If you’re looking into a Master’s program or a certification program, ensure it fits your career and personal goals. Attend information sessions, reach out to admissions counselors, and ask all the questions you have to ensure the program is a good fit for you.
In addition to the TFA scholarship, what other resources or supports have you discovered to finance your leadership journey and certification?
I am incredibly grateful for the scholarship offered through TFA to pursue my goal of becoming a principal. I also received grants through the university to support a few classes, based on my GPA. These financial resources have been essential in making my educational journey more manageable.
Any specific financial advice you would offer to others embarking on this journey?
Enrolling in a higher education program is an investment. It’s important to plan for it and make sure it’s financially feasible. Most institutions are transparent about the costs, so map out your expenses in advance and create a payment plan. Also, seek out scholarships and grants—there are a lot of opportunities out there, you just have to do the research!
