Recognizing Alumni Making an Impact Toward Education Equity
The Alumni of the Year awards honor distinguished alumni teachers, school leaders, and systems leaders who have shaped equity in education and strengthened our alumni community at the classroom, school, and systems levels. Winners will be announced in Spring 2025, will receive a $5,000 award, and will be honored at our annual gala in May and the Homecoming Summit in October. Get to know the finalists below.
Teacher of the Year
The Frances and Elliot Lehman Alumni of the Year Award is an annual award given to an outstanding teacher in the Greater Chicago-Northwest Indiana region who is an alum of Teach For America and has exemplified, shaped, and maintained equitable practices in their classroom.
Jeraniqua Martin
5th Grade General Education Monolingual Teacher
A.J. Katzenmaier Academy
Jeraniqua is a passionate and innovative 5th-grade monolingual general education teacher in North Chicago, Illinois. She has made a lasting impact on her students and the broader school community through her dedication to excellence in education. She recently led an initiative that fostered a more inclusive environment where all students could learn from one another and feel a sense of belonging. She designed collaborative learning activities that paired monolingual students with their dual-language peers that included joint projects, team-based problem-solving tasks, and cultural exchange sessions, where students shared aspects of their heritage and language. Jeraniqua prioritizes a classroom environment where differences are celebrated, collaboration is encouraged, and all students feel empowered to succeed together. In 2025, Jeraniqua was honored by the Illinois State Board of Education Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards—Award of Special Recognition.

The Zell Family Alumni of the Year Award is an annual award given to an outstanding school leader in the Greater Chicago-Northwest Indiana region who is an alum of Teach For America and has exemplified, shaped, and maintained equitable practices in their school.
Elizabeth Jamison-Dunn

Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School
Elizabeth Jamison-Dunn is a proud Chicago native who witnessed firsthand the disparities that too often exist in urban education. Those experiences shaped her unwavering commitment as an advocate for change. After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Howard University, she joined Teach For America in 2007, beginning her career at Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School on Chicago's west side. For nearly two decades, she has dedicated herself to the Catalyst Circle Rock community, serving as a middle school teacher, mentor teacher, Director of Instruction, and, since 2015, principal. As principal, she has worked tirelessly to foster a supportive, high-achieving school environment. Elizabeth believes in the power of rigorous academics and strong relationships to close the opportunity gap. Her efforts have been recognized through several honors, including the 2012 Teach for America Chicago Alumni Distinguished Teacher Award and the 2024 CPS Game Changer Award for Charter Leaders. She was also a finalist for the 2019 Illinois Network of Charter Schools Charter Excellence Award for Principal of the Year.

The Systems Leader of the Year Award is an annual award given to an outstanding systems leader in the Greater Chicago-Northwest Indiana region who is an alum of Teach For America and has exemplified, shaped, and maintained equitable practices within an organization, community, or across a sector, within or beyond the education landscape.
Jesse Ilhardt

VOCEL (Viewing Our Children as Emerging Leaders)
Jesse is an innovative, relationship-focused leader, who leveraged her early childhood teaching and program leadership experience with to co-found VOCEL in 2013. VOCEL provides two-generation early childhood education programming for young children, families, and schools in overburdened, under-resourced communities, aiming to support early brain development and build a foundation for academic and life success. Motivated by 10+ years spent teaching and coaching teachers at Teach For America, working alongside parents of little ones, and now as a mother herself, Jesse is committed to supporting the parents and professionals whose everyday interactions with their young children are developing our world's future leaders. VOCEL has been a proven gamechanger for families, bridging a critical access gap in under-resourced communities impacted by disinvestment and limited early learning options. Jesse is on a mission to ensure more people have access to the growing body of early neuroscience and early learning recommendations.
