Impact Report

A Letter From the Executive Director

Anajah Roberts
Executive Director
Teach for America Greater Chicago–Northwest Indiana

St. Louis ’10

When I accepted the role of Executive Director in April, I immediately thought about my mother who was a Chicago Public Schools teacher for 32 years. Before she passed away, she dedicated her career to empowering generations of new teachers to create for their students access to an excellent and equitable education.

Our communities face unprecedented challenges today as we strive to recover from the pandemic’s devastating impact on education amidst opportunity gaps that previously existed. I know my mom would be proud of the work I am doing—in partnership with you—to be a part of rebuilding the education system for our kids in Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

Despite the devastating effects the pandemic has had on student growth, I hold on to hope. Our coalition of over 3,000 corps members and alumni  are having a daily profound impact on students and communities across Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Teach For America is making a difference by preparing a pipeline of diverse, equity-oriented leaders for high impact education roles. We work closely with our partners to test, implement, and share promising practices to spur innovation across the education ecosystem. We build coalitions to make systems-level changes. We were made for a moment such as this.

Teach For America’s multi-faceted approach has played a vital role on the path to progress and we can’t do it alone. It will take a broad and diverse coalition of people united around common purpose and shared values: no single solution or organization is sufficient to bring about an equitable and excellent education for all children. We each have a role to play in ensuring that all students in our community are on a path to economic mobility and a future filled with possibility. I’m proud to share my mom’s dream for a more equitable education system and I invite you to join me in continuing our work to make it a reality.

Our Scale and Impact

Since 2000, Teach For America’s network of leaders has worked with families and students to expand educational opportunity in Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

Our Greatest Challenge

Educational inequity is still our greatest challenge, especially in the wake of the pandemic.

Our Plan

We will develop leaders, ignite our leaders to solve educational inequity, and influence change within our communities.

We need the sustained commitment of the philanthropic sector to build an education system that prepares students for economic and social mobility.
